SEA Task 1: Spelling Format

In Task 1, you’ll see 4 sentences. Each sentence has ONE misspelled word. Your job is to find it!

Task 1 Example

Instructions: In each sentence, ONE word is misspelled. Find it!

  1. The recieve was very happy with the service. ❌ (receive)
  2. She went to the libary to borrow a book. ❌ (library)
  3. The beutiful sunset amazed everyone. ❌ (beautiful)
  4. They beleive in working hard. ❌ (believe)

Test Strategy

Read each sentence carefully. Look for words that “don’t look right.” Common errors include: ie/ei, silent letters, double consonants, and homophones!

Common Homophones on SEA

Homophones sound the same but have different spellings and meanings. These are tested frequently!

Memory Trick

It’s = It is (apostrophe = missing letter)
Its = Possessive (no apostrophe, like “his” or “hers”)

Task 1 Test Strategies

How to Ace Task 1 (Spelling)

  1. Read the ENTIRE sentence – Don’t just scan for errors.
  2. Look for “ugly” words – Words that don’t look right usually aren’t.
  3. Check homophones – their/there, your/you’re, its/it’s
  4. Watch for ie/ei – Remember: “I before E except after C”
  5. Check silent letters – library (not libary), February (not Febuary)
  6. Look for double consonants – necessary, occurred, committee
  7. Eliminate obvious correct words – Focus on suspicious words
  8. Manage your time – Don’t spend more than 1 minute per question
