Algebra and estimation questions appear in Section I and II of the SEA Math paper. These help you check your work! (SEA Framework Page 21-22)
Start by watching this video to learn about number sentences with unknowns. Take notes as you watch! 📝
Did you understand the video? Review the notes below before continuing! ✅
In algebra, we use letters or symbols to represent unknown numbers. These are called variables.
Problem: 5 + โก = 12
Answer: โก = 7
Problem: n โ 8 = 15
Answer: n = 23
Problem: 6 ร x = 42
Answer: x = 7
Always check your answer by substituting it back into the original number sentence!
Estimation helps you quickly find an approximate answer. This is useful for checking if your exact answer is reasonable!
Problem: Estimate 487 + 312
Estimated Answer: 800
Problem: John calculated 1,234 ร 5 = 6,170. Is this reasonable?
Answer: Yes, reasonable (exact: 1,234 ร 5 = 6,170)
Problem: Sarah calculated 892 โ 456 = 1,348. Is this reasonable?
Answer: No, Sarah made an error (she added instead of subtracted)
In the SEA exam, always estimate first before calculating. This helps you catch mistakes before submitting your answer!
Test your understanding! Select an answer for each question. 🔤
Great job finishing Lesson 1.8! You’re mastering algebra and estimation for the SEA exam! 🎉
