Money Combinations
For the SEA exam, you need to find different ways to make the same amount. This is Objective 15!
📊 Example: Making $50
| Combination | Bills/Coins | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Option 1 | 1 × $50 bill | $50 |
| Option 2 | 5 × $10 bills | $50 |
| Option 3 | 2 × $20 bills + 1 × $10 bill | $50 |
| Option 4 | 1 × $20 bill + 3 × $10 bills | $50 |
| Option 5 | 10 × $5 coins | $50 |
💡 Strategy for Finding Combinations:
- Start with the largest bill possible
- Subtract that amount from the total
- Repeat with the next largest bill/coin
- Continue until you reach $0
- Try different combinations to find all possibilities
Making Change
A common SEA question is calculating change from a purchase. Here’s how to do it!
📊 Example Problem:
Question: John buys a book for $35. He pays with a $50 bill. How much change does he receive?
Solution:
- Amount Paid: $50
- Cost of Item: $35
- Change = Amount Paid − Cost
- Change = $50 − $35 = $15
Answer: John receives $15 change.
Check Your Work
Add the change back to the cost: $35 + $15 = $50 ✓ This confirms your answer is correct!
