Lesson 4.1: Statistics – Data Representation & Interpretation | SEA Mathematics | My Carib Academy
SEA 2025-2028 Framework Aligned
📊 Lesson 4.1: Statistics – Data Representation & Interpretation
Master tally charts, frequency tables, pictographs, bar graphs and interpreting data. This lesson covers SEA Mathematics Objectives 179-181 from the Statistics Strand.
Create and interpret frequency tables (Objective 179)
Read and create pictographs with keys (Objective 179)
Read and create bar graphs (Objective 179)
Interpret data from tables, charts and graphs (Objectives 180-181)
Solve problems using data from graphs and charts
SEA Tip
Statistics questions appear in Section I, II, and III of the SEA Math paper. These are often easy marks if you can read graphs! (SEA Framework Page 27-28)

Tally Charts & Frequency Tables
Tally charts and frequency tables help us organize and count data quickly!
📋 What is a Tally Chart?
Tally Mark System
Each tally mark represents 1
Every 5th mark goes diagonally across the previous 4
This makes counting easier (count by 5s)
Also called the five-bar gate system
📊 Example 1: Tally Chart & Frequency Table
Tally marks convert to frequency numbers
Quick Tip
Always draw the 5th tally mark diagonally across the first 4. This makes counting much faster!
Watch: Frequency Tables
Now watch this video to learn more about frequency tables. 🎯

Watch: Pictographs
Watch this video to learn about pictographs and how to use keys. 🎯
Pictographs – Mathematics Video Lesson
Pictographs
Pictographs use pictures or symbols to represent data. Each picture represents a certain number of items!
📋 Key Points for Pictographs:
Important Rules
Always include a key to show what each picture represents
Pictures must be the same size
Pictures must be arranged in rows or columns
Include a title for the pictograph
For partial amounts, draw a fraction of the picture
📊 Example 2: Pictograph with Key
Each circle represents 2 students
Watch: Bar Graphs
Watch this video to learn about bar graphs. 🎯
Bar Graphs – Mathematics Video Lesson
Bar Graphs
Bar graphs use bars to represent data. The height or length of each bar shows the frequency!
📋 Key Points for Bar Graphs:
Important Rules
Bars must be the same width
There must be equal gaps between bars
Include a title for the graph
Label both axes (horizontal and vertical)
Include a scale on the vertical axis
📊 Example 3: Bar Graph
Bar height shows the frequency
Watch: Interpreting Tables, Charts & Graphs
Watch this video to learn how to interpret data from tables, charts and graphs. 🎯
Interpreting Tables, Charts & Graphs – Mathematics Video Lesson
Interpreting Tables, Charts & Graphs
Being able to read and interpret data is an important skill for the SEA exam!
📋 Tips for Interpreting Data:
Step-by-Step Method
Read the title to understand what the data is about
Check the labels on axes or columns
Look at the key or scale to understand the values
Find the information you need in the graph or table
Answer the question using the data
📊 Example 4: Interpreting a Bar Graph
Answering Questions from Data
Question: Looking at the bar graph above, which term had the most books read?
Solution:
Look at the bars: Find the tallest bar
Read the label: Term 4 has the tallest bar
Check the value: Term 4 = 10 books
Answer: Term 4 had the most books read (10 books)
Memory Trick
Tally: Counting with marks (5-bar gate) Frequency: How many times something occurs Pictograph: Pictures represent data (check the key!) Bar Graph: Bars show amounts (taller = more)
